Quilting and Cuties

This summer I had an opportunity to try my hand at a new skill.  I took a basic quilting class to create an around the world quilt.  I had so much fun choosing the colors and patterns and I loved how it turned out.  The judge at the county fair loved it to because she gave it Best in Show!  I cannot wait to make some others.  I decided to use them as unique backdrops as well.  Here is my first quilt: A Sprinkle of Sunlight. I hope you love it as much as I do!

We wanted to include mom in the photo shoot but she wasn’t going to find out the gender until a luncheon the next day.  We decided to blindfold her and let the boys make her a keepsake shirt if the proper color. :)

A New Landmark

An Iron Mountain landmark has changed!  If you have ever driven down Carpenter Avenue from Kingsford into Iron Mountain, you have probably seen the Doll Draperies sign on the side of the building.  DSC_6266Interestingly, the building that hosts the sign, no longer houses Doll Draperies.  Instead you will find Affordable PC and Pure Whimsy Photography in that location. Today, that Doll Draperies sign has changed! DSC_6270 DSC_6274 DSC_6278 DSC_6292

Woodland Fairy Cake Smash | Iron Mountain Photographer

For over a year, I have been envisioning a woodland fairy set-up for a birthday shoot, culminating in a cake smash.  Miss Gloria made that dream come true for me!  Not only was she the perfect little fairy, she smashed the heck out of her cake.  I have never had a baby smash a cake so joyfully in the studio, and only Mimi rivals Gloria for all time epic smash for Pure Whimsy. :)  I love cake smash sessions and I am always so happy when the baby has a great time as well.

Before the mess of the cake smash, we always do some formal photos in either the same set up or a complimentary one.  For Gloria, she wanted to model her cute denim dress and the birthday dress that her big sister also wore for her first birthday.

Do You Love Pets? So Do We!

Almost Home Animal Shelter in Iron Mountain is a fantastic organization.  Their employees and volunteers work tirelessly to take the best possible care of their animals.  They also love to care for the community as well, providing fun events for people and their pets.  I moved to the area just in time to catch one such event at the fair.  The doggy obstacle course and training classes were a lot of fun to watch and had the bleachers packed.

Iron Mountain Pet Photographer

This coming Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday you have a chance to give back to the animal shelter.  Pure Whimsy Photography is offering mini photo sessions with a 5×7 print in exchange for your donation of a bag of cat or dog food or other wish list item.  The wish list can be found here.

Iron Mountain Pet Photographer

These photo sessions are Valentine themed, on either the pink or purple set up.  I photograph both pets and people so you can schedule your session for either or both! Please email melissa@purewhimsyphoto.com, call 503-715-6075, or send a message on Facebook www.facebook.com/purewhimsyphoto to book your session.  I look forward to hearing from you.  So does the Almost Home Animal Shelter!

Want a Free Maternity Session? | Upper Peninsula Newborn Photographer

Every pregnancy is different, and even though it feels like your precious little one is taking forever to here, ever pregnancy is fleeting.   I did not do official maternity photos with my first daughter.  I regret that action immensely.  I took my own photos along the way of course and I loved comparing my ever growing tummy to previous photos, but I cannot tell you where those photos ended up.  I probably have them somewhere, although we have gone through several computers in the last eight years and I may not have them anywhere.   For my second daughter, we did a few professional photos as an add on to my daughter’s birthday shoot.  I have a lovely framed collage that I know exactly where it is and those photos exist for my children.

I still wish I had taken the time to do a full-on maternity session though.  I had several reasons for never following through.  I was huge!  I felt fat.  We needed to save our money for the baby.  I’d rather have newborn photos.  I never like the way I look in photos.  There was so much to do before the baby came.  I could go on and on….

I don’t want this to happen to you.  If you hire a photographer with skill, experience, good communication skills, and an empathetic heart, you can have an excellent maternity session.  At Pure Whimsy, I am careful to take the time to get to know you, to learn what you want to achieve from your session, to make you feel comfortable and beautiful in your own skin, and to make the process as painless at possible.  Your baby will want to see those photos someday.  Children are fascinated by them.  “You mean I was in there??  That bump is me?”

Now for the fun part.  When you book a newborn session and pay that session fee, your maternity session is complimentary. :) Now for the even more fun part.  You can choose to keep your maternity session separate and have your own viewing and ordering session for those maternity photos, or you can add it on to your newborn viewing/ordering.  I understand that you have a lot going on before the baby comes.  Some moms are so excited to get the maternity photos back and to share them with everyone so they choose to do the ordering session early.  Other moms want to wait until after the baby comes and take care of it all at once.  Both are completely fine with me!

To book your newborn session and receive your free maternity session, email melissa@purewhimsyphoto.com.  I look forward to hearing from you!

The World’s Best (and most unassuming) Oatmeal Cookies

If you asked me what my overall favorite type of cookie was, I would not say oatmeal. They are usually too dry and crumbly or else packed with raisins or other “goodies” that I don’t care for.  However, if you asked me for my favorite cookie recipe, this one is in the top two.  I love, love, love these oatmeal cookies.  They look plain and boring, and are often left alone at pot lucks or cookie parties because of their appearance.   Once you taste these cookies, you will never again leave them behind.  I love their sneaky little flavor profile because it usually means there will be some left over for me to take home. Although that gets me in trouble with my diet, I honestly don’t mind. :) Now, are you ready to try them?  Get your gear together, preheat your oven to 350, and I will talk you through it. Untitled-1 We are going to start with two eggs, some crisco/vegetable shortening, and a cool trick I wish I had learned earlier in life.  Normally I like to trade out the vegetable shortening or oil for real butter because I like the taste much better, but in this recipe I actually use the shortening.   For the first step, crack your eggs into your 1 cup measuring cup.  Swirl the egg around so that it touches all sides of the cup. DSC_0258 Now pour your eggs into the mixing bowl. DSC_0262 The next step is the cool trick.  Fill your measuring cup with shortening.  The egg on the sides of the cup will cause the shortening to pop into the mixing bowl easy-peasy. Untitled-2 Cream together the eggs and shortening. DSC_0268 Then add 1 cup of white sugar and 1 cup of firmly packed brown sugar.  It is important to pack in the brown sugar or your measurement will be off. DSC_0273 Mix together quickly and then add the next set of the dry ingredients:  1 1/4 cup flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp cinnamon.  As you can see, I let my cinnamon heap a little instead of leveling it off.  I love cinnamon and it is good for you. DSC_0274 If you couldn’t tell from my blog, website, or photography, I LOVE color!  My house is a colorful and happy place.  This includes my baking supplies as well.  Life is more fun that way. DSC_0271 Now for the vanilla.  USE THE REAL PRODUCT!  None of the fake, imitation crap.  If you have never used real vanilla, I suggest you start now.  Your world will change!  I know it is expensive but if you want the best flavor, you need to use the best ingredients.  My vanilla is from Mexico but when I run out, I will be making my own.  I will let you know when I do. For this recipe you need 1 teaspoon.  I did the dry measurements first so that they didn’t stick to the wet teaspoon after using the vanilla. DSC_0275 I make sure my dough is well mixed, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, and then add three cups of raw oats.  Mix again. DSC_0276 Your cookie dough mixture should look like this. DSC_0278 I know I am *supposed* to tell you not to lick the beater or eat the raw dough.  That would be a serious case of do as I say, not as I do. ;) DSC_0277 To prepare your cookie sheet, you can do one of three things: parchment paper, a silpat mat, or grease the cookie sheet.  The first two are easier clean up but are not always on hand.  Scoop heaping spoonfuls, or better yet, use a cookie scoop, to place 6 even dough balls on the sheet and slightly flatten them. DSC_0279 DSC_0281 Bake your cookies in the preheated oven (350) for 12-15 minutes.  When you take them out, let them cool for a few minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet. DSC_0282 Your cookies are ready for sharing and better yet, eating!  They will leave a heavenly aftertaste of cinnamon and vanilla that will bring you back for more.  This particular batch I baked as a homecoming for my aunt and uncle who are moving to my town but I made sure to make a few extra to keep at home.  I hope you enjoy and please let me know if you have any questions.  Happy baking!  Have a very tasty Tuesday. :)
